Clean sheets across the board for Durham County girls
Durham County U15 girls halted their opponents this weekend with a thrilling 46-0 victory against Cumbria.
In the first of their County matches away at Doncaster, the north east girls showed their dominance with a clean sheet.
Durham’s Lucy Capenhurst opened the score with an unconverted try as her teammates swiftly passed the ball across the pitch and into her capable hands. Cumbria barely had time to take a breath when Kate Smith powered over from a pickup at the back of a scrum to score between the posts and Sophie Derbyshire’s boot added the extras to lead 12 – 0.
Without ado from the kick off, it looked like Faith Robinson had a certain try but, unluckily, the points were lost when the ball was not grounded.
However, this was soon remedied as Maddy Graham dodged through the Cumbrian defence to add her five points. Shortly after swift passing across the backs gave the fleet footed April Ishida the opportunity to outpace the opposition defence and bring the score up to 22 – 0 heading towards half time.
Cumbria piled on the pressure in an attempt to get some points on the board before the first half whistle which forced Durham to concede a penalty in their 22. With the resulting lineout so close to the Durham try line – it looked as if their determination would pay off. However, the Durham girls had other plans as their phenomenal tackling held Cumbrian off the line.
Cumbria sustained the pressure to test the Durham defence but an unfortunate injury to the opposition halted play. This gave Durham time to regroup and eventually send the ball back up the park ending the first half 22 – 0 ahead.
Both teams came back from the break with renewed vigour and fire in their hearts to gain the ascendancy.
Despite their efforts it was not to be Cumbria’s day as a handling error saw the ball drift into their try area and Capenhurst’s darted to the ball to add pressure and a further seven points with a Derbyshire conversion.
Another show of accurate handling skills from the team saw Megan Martin assist Ishida who ran from the halfway line to under the posts. Following her assist, Martin got a try of her own after some nifty sidestepping.
Cumbria were left slightly shell shocked as Martin crossed the line again on the blow of the whistle to round of the match 46 – 0.
