Durham Ladies vs Cumbria Ladies 8th May 2016 – match report

SUNDAY 8th MAY 2016

WOMENS’ RUGBY COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

DURHAM LADIES 27 V CUMBRIA LADIES 12

After last week’s 24 all draw against Northumberland, Durham Ladies faced Cumbria Ladies at Hartlepool RFC’s Mayfield Park Ground this afternoon.  See Photos

After a few minutes into the first half, Durham’s outside centre Claudia McDonald opened the scoring with a try, the conversion being missed.

Unfortunately in another attack, when almost certain to score, McDonald hurt a knee when tackled onto the hard pitch, and had to be carried off, and took no further part in the game.

Both packs were fairly evenly match and tackled uncompromisingly, last season’s skipper, Jess Cheesman, putting in some sterling work in Durham’s back row.

Durham went further ahead with a second unconverted try by lock forward Harriet Rawet. The half time score was Durham Ladies 10, Cumbria Ladies nil.

Cumbria played down the slope in the second half, and attacked from the re-start. Their opening try was scored by Kendal’s Hayley Hodgson which was converted by fly half Meghan Montgomery.

Durham’s third try was scored by prop forward Emily Hunter of Darlington Mowden Park followed soon after  by right winger Rachelle Cooley with their fourth, both being unconverted.

The home team gave away a number of penalties in the second half. Cumbria capitalised on their errors, scoring two further tries by their captain Lucy Meadley, the second converted by Montgomery.

Durham got their heads down and upped their work rate which resulted in Sunderland centre Tara  Breslin scoring their fifth try under the posts which was converted by fly half Laura Envy.

Next Sunday Durham face Lancashire, the game has been switched from Preston Grasshoppers RFC to Liverpool-St. Helens RFC, 2.30 kick off.
