Durham V Cheshire U15s: December, 4 2016

Durham U15s rounded off their season with a smile despite a disappointing loss against Cheshire at Vale of Lune.

The U15s were out done by a fierce attacking team that played reactive rugby.

However, despite the loss the girls kept the fight up to the whistle and walked away smiling!

Durham County 2015/2016 season summary

County girls u15s

Durham County U15 has had a fun packed season with the weather affecting almost every game! But in summary;

The season started with open trails 15th October at Darlington Mowden Park. The event was well attended with girls from across the county turning up. The girls were split into teams and the trail consisted of a game allowing coaches to view the players in a competitive environment.

20 players where then selected from the group to attend training before the scheduled county festival at Tynedale RFC on 15th November. The 20 players selected and club are below;

Jade Sullivan Horden RFC
Lucy Wharrier Horden RFC
Chlore Broom Horden RFC
Beth Cunninton Horden RFC
Ellie Pigford Horden RFC
Shannon Hetherington Horden RFC
Erin High Sunderland RFC
Maisey Llyod Sunderland RFC
Charlie Barkes Sunderland RFC
Caitlin Render Horden RFC
Morgan Maitland Sunderland RFC
Ellie Gutcher Horden RFC
Faith Robinson Acklam RFC
Alice Birket Bishiop Auckland RFC
Mica Ferguson Harton School
Rhiannon Lowery Bishiop Auckland RFC
Sophie Brunskill Bishiop Auckland RFC
Eden Button Bishiop Auckland RFC
Maddie Craggs Sunderland RFC

Unfortunately due to the severe weather the festival was cancelled.

This meant the next event would be the away game to Cheshire on the 29th November this again was hit by the weather! In the end we managed to get a game played away to Cheshire on 6th December.

The game was a hard physical contest with Durham defending from the kick off, the side did well to keep the opposition out for 10 minutes. After the initial try Cheshire then managed to get two more in quick concession. Then Durham straightened up their running lines and become a lot more direct, this lead to much more attacking rugby and narrowing the score board. In the end Cheshire only secured the win by one try. The game was a great test of Durham’s skills and showed the growth in recent years, in the end the lack of game time showed on the pitch.

The squad only had a week’s turn around before their home game to Cumbria, this again was hit by the weather, Snow this time! This led to no activity until we managed to gain a friendly against Northumberland on 10th January. The game was played at Druid Park on the 3G so no chance of the weather ruining the plans again!

Northumberland put out a strong side which had obviously been training hard. They lead the whole game playing some wide and expansive rugby. Durham where hit with Injury after Injury and in the end played a player down. The game was a good learning experience for the girls and again gave us a measure of where we were.

After this the Northern U15 girls trails where held, 3 girls from Durham have been selected to represent the North;

Maddie Craggs – Sunderland RFC
Erin High – Sunderland RFC
Ellie Pigford – Horden RFC

With the weather interrupting the planned activity we have extended the planned season and will have training and a game against Cumbria;

2nd March 18:00-19:30 Horden RFC
16th March 18:00-19:30 Horden RFC
20th March Game V Cumbria 13:00 K.O Venue TBC
